Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid found in neuronal cell membranes that may help support optimal cognitive function. Phosphatidylserine helps to maintain membrane fluidity, and may help to mediate the activity of several neurotransmitters, including norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. Phosphatidylserine can be metabolized into the choline-containing neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which may play a role in supporting cognitive health. Phosphatidylserine supplementation may increase brain-derived neurotropic factor, a protein that may influence neuronal functions. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, daily supplementation with 300 mg of phosphatidylserine for six months promoted healthy cognitive function, which extended three months after the trial ended.*
